To put it rather bluntly, I am not the type who wants to go back to the land; I am the type who wants to go back to the hotel.

![]() Forget fiscal cliffs and military sex scandals. The next big worry is .the extinction of the coffee bean. ![]() Rain is good for me. I feel like I achieve clarity actually when it rains. The longer I have to sit and wait, the clearer my game becomes to me. ~ Venus Williams Yesterday, when my husband walked in after only an hour of early morning tennis, I asked him what was up. “Rain,” he said. “It started raining.” With a whoop of joy, I ran to the patio window and drew back the blinds. I love any kind of inclement weather. Too much Southern California sunshine puts me in a stupor, so I was eager to feast on much grayness after the temperature hit 90°earlier in the week. For a Back East girl, any indications of seasonal changes, even a late into autumn temperature reading in the high 60s, is enough for me to bring out the long-sleeved shirts. But I should have remembered that the weatherpersons had predicted only a 20% chance of rain. Indeed, what I saw was barely a drizzle. The few splashes of water didn’t even cover the concrete with a film of moisture. It was not what I’d call an opportunity to pull out my new rain boots and trench coat, bought for upcoming trips to cities with real weather, and dance in the puddles. There were none. But the sky remained gray, filled with clouds all day. I made a pot of beef and barley cabbage soup and pulled on my navy long-sleeved Gap shirt for the first time in 6 months. Sometimes you take what you can get and a good soup is always a winner. |
