Palm trees are like cats - not my favorite trees but iconic as images. So I indulge my love/hate relationship with these trees - I don't believe they are really trees - by playing with them.

Welcome to a new weekly post category - TGIF - Good Stuff for the Weekend.
I read so many blogs with good stuff that I decided to share them on Fridays. Photography, travel, books, clothing, art journals, lectures, politics, whatever. I'll be collecting throughout the week and posting for your weekend reading pleasure. Enjoy the inaugural post ... ~ I've become an Austin Kleon fan. ~ I've finally found my fashion style and the Vivienne Files helps me put it together. Today's post helps you organize your closet like a boutique. ~ My virtual creative coach, Cynthia Morris of Original Impulse, is generous with her encouragement and sharing her process. Friday's post talks about what she does when she's floundering. ~ In particular, Cynthia introduced her readers to Creative Mornings, with talks from around the world. Here's one about infographics from the London chapter. ~ I've been waiting for weeks to see this documentary and I have tickets for tonight. Finding Vivian Maier ~ I hope this play comes to Los Angeles. Camp David by Lawrence Wright I've decided to post about my process/progress from time to time. I've been studying photography for several years and have overcome the initial WTF, the beginning steps of learning about the technology in the camera and the elements of how to compose and shoot a decent, if not actually interesting shot. Plus knocking my head up against some rudimentary tools in Photoshop Element 10. Recently I've had the opportunity to photograph several events. In an earlier post, I put up some shots in museum lighting, submitted to the Facebook person at Craft and Folk Art Museum. Below are a few in really low, synagogue sanctuary lighting. The first group was a wonderful discussion between Rabbi Ed Feinstein of Valley Beth Shalom(VBS) and retired Rev. Catherine S. Roskam (Bishop Suffragan, Episcopal Diocese of NY, currently Assisting Bishop in LA Diocese). After that are some from the recent Women's Seder at VBS. Low light, people dancing, a new lens. HAHAHAHA...what was I thinking? I tried everything as the evenings rolled on, frantic that I would end up with NADA. Cranked up the ISO, started in aperture mode, switched to shutter speed, manual, program. Brought a monopod for the seder. Photoshopped to within an inch of their lives, I submitted them for an upcoming photo exhibit entitled A Week in the Life of VBS. Fingers crossed... A congregant who had invited me to her adult Bat Mitzvah. saw me running around with the camera and asked if I would photograph the party. Having years of entertainment industry and public relations freelance experience, I just smiled and said yes. And thought - yay, more experience! Oy, more low light! It will be a freebie for me, but a special gift for her. I have tremendous respect for event photographers. |
