I want to capture grimy city streets
filled with hustling office workers dressed in good wool coats,
Twenty-storied apartment buildings with rusting fire escapes
covered in damp floral housedresses and embarrassing lingerie,
Shop windows offering chocolate truffles, lemon tarts and onion bagels
to tempt strolling lovers and tired moms with cranky kids,
Maybe a few well tended rose bushes with odd names
like Leaping Salmon, Neon Cowboy and Brilliant Pink Iceberg,
A Santa Barbara vineyard of ripening syrah and chardonnay grapes
surrounded by golden hills lit by the 4 o’clock August sun.
I’m intrigued about freezing a moment in time and surprising myself with what I caught.
The viewfinder frames me as I line up the image.  The photograph of coral, turquoise and pink cloth shoes
lined up outside the Chinese produce market records my visit to San Francisco.
It’s my vision that pops up on the computer monitor as I upload from the memory card.
I shoot the world. I find myself.
